A gift for just today,

Being in Egypt, the rising sun came to have even more significance in my mind when I learned about what the Ancient Egyptians thought about the rising sun and what it was representative of. Ra is the ancient Egyptian sun god and they believed he ruled in all parts of the created world. To the Egyptians, the sun represented light, warmth, and growth. This made the sun deity very important and the sun was seen as the ruler and creator of all. The story from the ancient Egyptians is that Ra (the sun) was thought to travel on two solar boats, one during the day and another at night, as he crossed over the horizon, set and rose again the following day. These boats took him on his journey through the sky and the underworld. When Ra travels in his sun boat he is accompanied by various other deities including Sia (perception) and Hu (command) as well as Heka (magic power) and other gods. In the evening the Egyptians believed that Ra transferred to his night boat, which would carry Ra through the underworld back towards the east in preparation for his rebirth at sunrise. This myth of Ra represent the sunrise as the rebirth of the sun by the sky goddess Nut, thus attributing the concept of rebirth and renewal to Ra.
So, you get a pic of a sunrise and a little lesson on Egypt, and I get to cross something else off my list!
